Inspiration | Carrie Mae Weems

See Carrie Mae Weems' retrospective at the Guggenheim ASAP.  I cannot recommend this exhibit enough.  Her work is beautiful, moving and cheeky at times.  For those not familiar with her work check out this review in The New Yorker

I Who Have Arrived In Heaven

I braved the first snow fall to venture out to David Zwirner to see the Yayoi Kusama installation.  Even with the blizzard swirling outside there was a huge crowd,  but I must say the snow and the wait were well worth it.  The infinity rooms are beautiful and other worldly it's the kind of work that stays with you and I've been dreaming about it ever since.

RIOT OF PERFUME

Friends of mine started Riot of Perfume, a very special arts and culture magazine that features contemporary fashion, art, music and much more.  I went to the issue 3 release party this week and had such a blast.  I find their dedication and ingenuity truly inspiring Check it out! http://riotofperfume.com/

Inspiration | William Miller

A photography professor I had recently sent me a link to an article on William Miller's "Gowanus Canal"in which he works with the interplay between man made waste and light reflections in the canal.  I've never seen toxic waste,  poop, and dead animals look so damn good!  Also I die over his "Ruined Polaroids"  in which he used a broken camera to produce brilliant abstractions by crushing polaroid film.  Truly inspiring work TGIF.

Inspiration | Turrell

By now I must be the only New Yorker who hasn't seen the James Turrell exhibit at the Guggenheim yet.  A friend brought it up yesterday and totally reignited my desire to check it out.  So naturally, I spent the larger portion of this afternoon in a Turrell wiki hole.  Perfect way to ward off this case of the Mondays I think.  Enjoy.

Inspiration | Uta Barth

A friend of mine just introduced me to the work of Uta Barth and already I am absolutely in love.  I'm bowled over by the way she uses light to achieve abstraction.  She also shoots exclusively in her house enabling her to capture the fleeting ephemeral qualities that exists within the mundane everyday, while still maintaining the sense of wonder which is the true essence of life (or so i believe).  You can find the interview that captured my heart here: http://www.macfound.org/fellows/859/
